Hoke's basketball season-opener in Raeford was bittersweet as the E.E. Smith Golden Bulls scored a 3-point basket at the buzzer for a come-from-behind victory over the Fighting Bucks. Appearing improved over last year's team, Hoke seemed eager to claim a win over the visiting E.E. Smith team from Fayetteville. However, the Golden Bulls made fewer mistakes in the closing minutes of the game, setting up their opportunity for a final winning shot with only seconds remaining. Although his team only needed a 2-point shot to win, Willie Gilmore found himself running out of time as he tried to dribble towards the basket and ended up firing a 3-point shot from long range that dropped cleanly through the net to grab victory away from the scrappy Hoke team.
